Jhene Aiko understands the power of words and was careful when selecting a name for her daughter, Namiko Browner. The R&B star tells Complex magazine exclusively that Namiko Love, meaning “child of the wave,” is more than a pretty name.

Jhene explains that her daughter was named after a book by Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Monk Thick Nhat Hanh. “He has a story about how there’s no difference between the water and the wave. There’s no such thing as birth and death because the wave cannot die; it’s all water. Things manifest when the conditions are right, and they don’t manifest when they’re not right. But there are no ends, no beginnings, just continuation.”

Aiko also talks about the challenges of single motherhood saying,  “My schedule can get crazy, but I have a very supportive family. My oldest sister really keeps everything in order. When I’m out of town, she or my mom or my daughter’s father will care for her. [When in town] I take my daughter to school every day, and if I’m working at night, I try to get back to put her to bed. I think if I work really hard now, I can slow down in a few years and even bring her to my shows.”

Namiko is Jhene and R&B singer O’Ryan’s only child together. The little one was born on November 19, 2008.
