The late John Madden will be on the Madden 23 cover

The cover of the new edition of the popular video game “Madden” will have a throwback feel as the late John Madden will appear on the game’s front for “Madden 23,” the NFL announced.

It will be a picture of Madden breaking throw a paper wall with the inscription “Thanks, Coach” alongside him. The latest version of the game will be released in August.

Madden died on Dec. 28, 2021.

It’s similar to the cover that was used when the game was first released in June 1988. It’s also the first time Madden will don the cover since the 2000 version of Madden was released in 1999.

"We were thinking about this year's game and who was going to go on it; it almost became an obvious answer," Seann Graddy, the executive producer of Madden NFL, told ESPN. "I say that because we really wanted to celebrate coach in the product this year and what he's meant to us for the 30-plus years that we've been using his name in our game."
